I’ve visited hundreds of homes of all shapes and sizes, some tidy, some best not discussed. “excuse the mess” is the line I hear most.

space is expensive and time is short, so things don’t get put away properly, they just get put somewhere.

most houses have at least one staircase, and under each is a triangular cave of hard-to-reach clutter. the answer is giant, full-extension drawers. engineered well and running on full-extension ball-bearing runners, often a metre deep or more, they swallow coats, shoes, boots, brooms, the vacuum, the kids’ school bags and sports kit, and keep it all in order. out of the way, easy to reach, and, just as important, easy to put back, neatly.
